My festive week

This week I had the pleasure of facilitating the ‘Painting wall’ project at the Brisbane Powerhouse Powerkidz festival. I’ve been invited to run these Powerkidz painting sessions for about five years now and each time the atmosphere of this amazing place and of course, the vibrant energy of working with children always inspires me.

Our local council owns this wonderful arts precinct, which once upon a time, used to be the old Brisbane power station, located along the Brisbane River.

The architect kept loads of lovely snippets of the original building structure in the revamp, including the graffiti, so it’s like walking into  an amazing old gutted warehouse that someone’s made habitable in a very cool way.

The building is four storeys high and that’s where the metres and metres of paintings made by the (1000+) children I worked with were strung up, along the railings of each level. This means the whole space begins to team with child-like wonder as the festival progresses. Very cool to be involved in!

It’s one of those places where art seems to organically spring up in the nooks and crannies of the place, and you come across them with surprise and delight. Some creative person working there made this lovely little posie of purple cabbage hearts, nestled in a pretty vase.

My lunch most days were spent under one of the beautiful giant fig trees just next to the building, while I ate tuna, cheese and crackers overlooking the river. Oh I know, it’s a hard life, but someone’s gotta do it.

The school holidays are over now so it’s back to the studio for me from this week. I hope you’ve had a wonderful week too! Did you get up to anything exciting?
